![]() ![]() This Fifth Edition is an update of the New Shorter with thousands of new words. The New Shorter also included much material not yet published by OED. It was the first complete revision of the dictionary, being in fact not so much an overhaul of the existing text as a reabridgement of the OED and its Supplements. The 'New Shorter' was prepared under the editorship of Lesley Brown 1980-1993. The Third Edition (1944) contained an appendix of addenda and corrigenda, and this edition was reprinted several times with corrections and additions, the most significant being in 1973, with enlarged addenda (now running to over 70 pages) and a major revision of all the etymologies. The Second Edition (1936) contained about 3,000 revisions and additions. The First Edition was published in 1933, in two volumes. He worked on it until his death in 1922, after which the dictionary was completed by H. ![]() The first editor, William Little, was appointed in 1902. Publication history: The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary was envisaged from the beginning as an abridgement of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). For scholars and those with a serious interest in the English language, the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary is an unrivalled resource for the study of the development and use of Modern English. All major words used in English after 1700, as well as all the words in Shakespeare, Milton, Spenser's Faerie Queene, and the King James Bible, are included many rare and obsolete words are also defined. The Dictionary is written on historical principles: entries show the historical development of words by listing meanings chronologically and giving datings for the first use of each sense. There is extensive coverage of scientific and technical English as well as English from around the world. In total there are over 83,000 illustrative quotations from 7,000 authors. This new edition incorporates a complete vocabulary update with over 3,500 new words and meanings, and many new illustrative quotations from modern authors. Its innovative design makes this vast amount of information easy to consult, and especially makes the fascinating illustrative quotations identifiable in their surrounding text. The Fifth Edition contains more than half a million definitions in its 3792 pages. The text is based on the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary and, in fact, the Shorter manages more than one third of the coverage of the OED in one tenth of the size. ![]() The Fifth Edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary is a complete update of the most authoritative reference work for modern English. ![]() ![]() ![]() * Power Attack Perk = 0.25 if power attacking and you have Savage Strike or Devastating Blow * Power Attack Bonus = 1 if power attacking ((Right Hand displayed Damage * (1 + Power Attack Bonus) * (1 + Power Attack Perk) * (1 + Dual Power Attack perk)) * Dual Power Attack Mod) + ((Left Hand displayed Damage * (1 + Power Attack Bonus) * (1 + Power Attack Perk) * (1 + Dual Power Attack perk)) * Dual Power Attack Mod) * Blessing of Auriel is additive with item effects while Blessing of Boethiah is additive with potion effect 2 * Barbarian/Armsman/Overdraw rank level ![]() * Smithing Increase should use the unrounded value based on this formula. Voiced by Elias Toufexis, in the game’s initial trailers Adam Jensen first struck me as an overly-gruff ex-SWAT member who desperately thinks being aloof is the height of coolness. The ending could be better, which I won’t spoil, but otherwise the plot and the stories within it are excellent.Īs are the characters. There's multiple conflicting parties, a good few twists and turns, and one of the best approaches to the topic of human augmentation and transhumanism without descending into overly sci-fi tropes. While it taps into what could have been a rote tale of conspiracies, the actual story is very good. Outside of Mankind Divided, I can’t think of another game that lets you do that Cyberpunk 2077 certainly doesn’t.Īnother smart mechanic is that some encounters with other characters put you in a form of conversational battle where you have to use your wits and feedback from a social augmentation to convince or compel the person to your line of thinking or give you access to an area you’re not supposed to be in.ĭeus Ex: Human Revolution’s story also stands up well to such conversational battles and the test of time. I loved to sneak and hack (the tense hacking mini game is rather smart) my way around various locations, turning automated turrets against their operators or finding a code to a security door by digging through the emails of a security guard.Įqually, when I was lacking the tools or correct hacking level to do this, a strength aug allowed me to stack various crates and office equipment to create a makeshift ladder to hop over security fences and laser grids, or get into out-of-reach vents. It’s no Doom Eternal, but being able to dodge between cover and blind-fire in third-person - what was a controversial move give the last two games only first-person - let you survive fights in which Jensen was completely outgunned.īut the real joy came from manipulating the game’s flexibility. On the hardest “Deus Ex” difficulty, Human Revolution forces you to think tactically about engaging in combat, meaning you’ll need to employ all manner of equipment and augmentations, such as cloaking or the being able to move at superhuman speeds.Īnd the actual gunplay itself is pretty neat, too. The art direction is simply exceptional, with the developers coining the term “Cyber Renaissance” to create modernized versions of the clothing and architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries I’d found myself wandering the small Detroit hub area simply admiring the coats and jackets of random characters. Speaking of today, while Human Revolution’s graphics engine is dated, it still looks very nice. But the Director’s Cut of Human Revolution retcons that by allowing you to deal with these battles in a more creative way it’s the version of the game to play today. This rubbed against the whole Deus Ex DNA of being able to choose how you take on such problems. The only fly in the ointment was that the boss battles in the game were subcontracted to another developer, who made the decision to force combat upon the players. You could sneak, snipe, tranquilize, hack or simply circumnavigate a lot of threats in the game I took great joy in knocking out guards as part of a non-lethal run, and stuffing them into vents or secluded corners, chuckling away to myself as I imagine them groggily waking up and wondering how they ended up in compromising positions with their comrades. But that actually worked in Human Revolution’s favor, offering smartly designed environments with all manner of things to look at, uncover, hack and blow up.Īnd like the original game, you could approach objectives in a variety of ways, including not killing any enemies in the entire game. ![]() And it didn’t there was no skills system and missions took place in smaller spaces. With modern graphics, I was worried that Human Revolution would fail to deliver the scale of the original game. Deus Ex offered a huge amount of systems and flexibility to approaching missions in levels that felt huge for a game from 2000. It was a risky move by developer Eidos Montreal, given it was looking to develop a game that was very much trying to be a modernized version of arguably one of the best games of all time. ![]() ![]() ![]() Simply, give 2 drinks, take 2 drinks, and pull a tile again. Cotton production spread throughout Texas.Ĭhicano and Mexican workers were the main labor force which developed these industries. ![]() Millions of previously arid acres were turned into orchards, sugar beet fields and vegetable fields. In 1902 the federal government started land reclamation projects and irrigation works which eventually turned much of the Southwest into rich agricultural land. Mining and ranching operations continued to develop, but the greatest growth came in cotton production and agriculture. These migrations coincided with the tremendous expansion of the economy in the Southwest. The unweighted version, where all weights are equal, is well studied, and admits tight upper and lower bounds on message complexity. We consider message-efficient continuous random sampling from a distributed stream, where the probability of inclusion of an item in the sample is proportional to a weight associated with the item. We also derive a tight message lower bound, which closes the message complexity of this fundamental problem. Finally, we use our weighted sampling algorithm to improve the message complexity of distributed $L_1$ tracking, also known as count tracking, which is a widely studied problem in distributed streaming. In addition to the upper bound, we also provide a lower bound on the message complexity that is nearly tight up to a $łog(1/\eps)$ factor. Residual heavy hitters generalize the notion of $\ell_1$ heavy hitters and are important in streams that have a skewed distribution of weights. Here the goal is to identify stream items that contribute significantly to the residual stream, once the heaviest items are removed. As an application of our algorithm for weighted SWOR, we derive the first distributed streaming algorithms for trackingheavy hitters with residual error. Our algorithm also has optimal space and time complexity. In this work, we present the first message-optimal algorithm for weighted SWOR from a distributed stream. Weighted samplingwithout replacement (weighted SWOR) eludes this issue, since such heavy items can be sampled at most once. However, in many applications the stream may have only a few heavy items which may dominate a random sample when chosen with replacement. Using extensive simulations on real-world network traces, we show that our algorithms are competitively accurate compared to the best existing solutions despite the fact that they make no assumptions on the underlying network or the placement of measurement switches. The AROMA infrastructure includes controller algorithms that approximate a variety of essential measurement tasks while providing formal accuracy guarantees. Therefore, AROMA can be deployed in many settings, and can also work in the data plane using programmable PISA switches. We introduce AROMA, a measurement infrastructure that generates a uniform sample of packets and flows regardless of the topology, workload and routing. Therefore, existing solutions often simplify the problem by making assumptions on the routing or measurement switch placement. However, performing such analytics without ``overcounting'' flows or packets that traverse multiple measurement switches is challenging. These measurements are often performed by collecting samples at network switches, which are then sent to the controller for aggregation. Network-wide traffic analytics are often needed for various network monitoring tasks. Finally, we compare the complexity and performance of our scheme with other potential approaches. The selection algorithm can be implemented in a queue-like data structure in which memory usage is uniformly bounded during measurement. We show that usage estimates arising from such selection are unbiased, and show how to estimate their variance, both offline for modeling purposes, and online during the sampling itself. Such limits are often required during arbitrary downstream sampling, resampling and aggregation operations employed in analysis of the data. This paper proposes a correlated sampling strategy that is able to select an arbitrarily small number of the "best" representatives of a set of flows. However, while this approach controls estimator variance, it does not place hard limits on the number of flows sampled. Recent work has shown that non-uniform sampling is necessary in order to control estimation variance arising from the observed heavy-tailed distribution of flow lengths. This motivates sampling of flow records. This paper addresses sampling strategy for flow records. However, the increasingly large volumes of flow statistics incur concomitant costs in the resources of the measurement infrastructure. IP flow records are commonly collected for this purpose: these enable determination of fine-grained usage of network resources. Many network management applications use as their data traffic volumes differentiated by attributes such as IP address or port number. ![]() ![]() ![]() Micropipettes (or micropipets) have been calibrated with high precision and accuracy in order to quickly and easily transfer specific volumes of solution. Check the markings carefully to determine the type of graduated pipet you are using. Some graduated pipets can be filled to the desired level and then drained completely. Its use requires an initial meniscus reading and a final meniscus reading the volume delivered is the difference between the two readings as is the case with a buret or a graduated cylinder. Most of the techniques for using the graduated pipet are similar to those for the transfer pipet with the exception that for most graduated pipets one does not deliver a measured volume by allowing the graduated pipet to completely drain. Note: Whereas the transfer pipet can be used only to deliver a fixed volume of liquid, the graduated pipet will deliver varying amounts. Do not blow or shake out the small amount of liquid remaining in the tip this has been included in the calibration. Keep the pipet tip in contact with the container wall for about 15 seconds after emptying. ![]() To deliver the desired volume hold the pipet in a vertical position, and drain the solution into the container with the tip of the pipet touching an inner wall of the container. To reduce parallax put the meniscus at the same level as your eye so that the front and back sides of the etched line coincide. Quickly remove the bulb, cover the stem end with your index finger as described above, and then carefully allow the bottom of the meniscus to drop to the calibration mark. Using the rubber pipet bulb in the manner described above, fill the pipet to several centimeters above the calibration mark. Without further rinsing of the beaker, add fresh solution to the beaker. ![]() Dry the outside of the tip with tissue, and discard the excess rinse solution in the beaker. Roll the pipet back and forth in a horizontal position to wet thoroughly the entire inside surface by partially releasing the index finger seal as necessary. Another method of conditioning the index finger is to wet it with water and dry it with a paper towel. For a well- conditioned index finger, try rubbing it in your palm. If your finger is too dry it will be difficult to maintain a satisfactory seal, but if it is too moist you will have trouble with precision control of the flow rate. Quickly remove the bulb and cover the upper end of the pipet with the index finger of your dominant hand to control the liquid flow. Prevent liquid from entering the bulb, which will easily happen if the pipet tip is removed from the solution while there is still suction in the bulb. Before using the bulb make sure there is no liquid inside of it.ĭraw a few mL of solution into the pipet by gently holding together the pipet bulb and the upper end of the pipet (do not force the pipet bulb onto the end of the pipet), squeezing the air out of the bulb, immersing the pipet tip into the liquid in the beaker, and carefully releasing the bulb just enough to draw the desired quantity into the pipet. Do this by placing about 15 mL of the solution in a clean, dry 50 mL beaker. Prior to pipetting a solution, rinse the pipet with several small portions of the solution. Handle pipets with great care to avoid bumping the tip against a hard surface. A broken tip may slightly alter the volume delivered. Before using the transfer pipet check the delivery tip for possible breakage. There will be a small residual volume of liquid remaining in the tip after the draining has ceased. When filled to this mark the pipet will deliver its rated volume if it is allowed to drain freely. ![]() The transfer pipet has a single calibration mark etched on its stem.
